Ange Postecoglou has played down the significance of Tottenham potentially moving five points clear at the Premier League summit with victory at Crystal Palace on Friday AOE

Spurs returned to top spot on Monday with a 2-0 win at home to Fulham and play before Arsenal and Manchester City this weekend AOE

Postecoglou insisted his primary focus is on improving the team after he was critical of their second-half display against Fulham AOE

“It doesn’t really add any significance because whatever happens Friday night there’s still a full round of Premier League fixtures to be played and nothing of any real significance comes of that,” he said AOE

“We’re in a good space at the moment but again we’ve still got plenty of work to do to make sure what we do now is sustainable AOE

“It’s not about making a short-term impact, it’s about building something which hopefully brings sustained opportunities of success for the club AOE

“There is a really good reason no manager will talk about winning a title in October or November because we know there’s a long way to go AOE

”Tottenham’s ascent to first position has seen them score 20 goals in nine matches, but Postecoglou feels attack is the area where they can improve the most AOE

He added: “We still have to grow in every area AOE

There are areas where we are already very good, particularly around the defensive side of the game AOE

I think we’ve been excellent there – really consistent AOE

“I still think our main growth will come in the attacking side of the game AOE

I still think particularly in the front third, a lot of our movements are still not natural and fluent like we want them to be, which isn’t surprising AOE

“But what is getting us the goals is that we have great quality up there, which is contributing to that AOE

I still think the biggest growth for us will be in our attacking side of the game AOE

”Spurs will have to assess Destiny Udogie for the Selhurst Park clash after the left-back was withdrawn in the 56th minute of Monday’s win with muscle tightness AOE

Pape Sarr (illness) and Ben Davies (knock) are fit and Yves Bissouma is also available after he served a one-match ban for his recent red card at Luton, but Postecoglou was coy over his team after Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg impressed against Fulham AOE

“It’s no different to any other week AOE

They’re not really dilemmas, just choices that people in my position have to make and I’ve always made those decisions pretty simply and cleanly about what I think we need,” the Australian coach explained AOE

“Tomorrow night we’ll start with a certain group of players and finish with another and it’s about trying to get the job done AOE

Not always in sport do you get a shot at redemption and successfully taking advantage of that opportunity is even rarer AOE

England’s pack, and their front row in particular, will have had four years of sleepless nights about that early November evening in 2019 AOE

In the 2019 Rugby World Cup final, England were decimated by South Africa’s power up front, as the brilliance of a scintillating semi-final win over New Zealand was quickly replaced by the humiliation of a 32-12 thumping AOE

The Springboks, then as now, pride themselves on their physicality and brutality at the breakdown, the set-piece and in open play AOE

Yet on a rainy night in Paris four years on, England’s pack fronted up, set the platform in a thrilling World Cup semi-final and earned their redemption arc AOE

Yet it still wasn’t enough AOE

This time, albeit by one point rather than 20, the result was the same – England’s players slumped on the turf in despair while their opponents revelled in victory AOE

And the fact they not only survived, but thrived, in the front row this time around will have been sheer vindication AOE

Borthwick entrusted the duo to paint an early picture of scrum parity to referee Ben O’Keeffe and they delivered, providing the base that led to multiple first-half penalties from the trusty boot of Owen Farrell AOE

Cole and Marler helped ensure scrum parity early on but that faded once the replacements came on (AFP via Getty Images)However, as the game wore on, Borthwick’s decision started to become prescient for the wrong reasons AOE

As Sinckler and Ellis Genge came on as prop replacements, the Springboks own bomb squad from the bench – led by Ox Nche and Vincent Koch – started to dominate at scrum-time AOE

Each engagement started to become eerily reminiscent of 2019 and it was eventually a scrum penalty on halfway that led to Handre Pollard’s decisive, game-winning three-pointer with two minutes to go AOE

It felt almost unfair on England’s big men given that the pack, as a whole, had more than held their own in other facets AOE

Of the 13 England forwards who played some part in that 2019 final, eight appeared in this last-four clash and stamped their mark all over a first half that was by far England’s best 40 minutes under Borthwick AOE

Maro Itoje was a lineout fiend, stealing a Springboks throw-in on halfway and putting doubt in the head of Bongi Mbonambi, whose crooked throw in his own 22 gave Farrell his first penalty goal of the day AOE

A new face from four years, George Martin, justified his surprise second-row selection ahead of incumbent Ollie Chessum on just his fourth Test start as he brilliantly marshalled England’s maul defence AOE

If Boks lock Eben EtzeAOE beth is world rugby’s best maul disruptor, then he may have witnessed first-hand the emergence of a new challenger to that crown AOE

Martin caused havoc as England improbably won three consecutive maul turnovers from attacking South African lineouts in the first half to frustrate their much-fancied opponents AOE

Pollard ultimately kicked the winning penalty, from a scrum infringement (PA Wire)The celebrations from the likes of Itoje, Jamie George and Ben Earl as those penalties and free-kicks were earned by the pack showed just how important this part of the gameplan was AOE

It began putting clear doubt in Springbok minds, as the worried tone from skipper Siya Kolisi when he discussed matter with referee O’Keeffe AOE betrayed AOE

The English tactic of throwing bodies in to contest every ruck relied on the diesel engines of the forwards and they delivered by dominating collisions and allowing the aerial bombardment strategy that followed to be effective AOE

But ultimately, despite a gameplan executed as well as it possibly could have been, the gap in quality AOE between the sides proved too much to overcome AOE

South Africa adjusted, Pollard came on for Manie Libbok to dictate proceedings with his metronomic boot and English heartbreak ensued AOE

There was no shame in a one-point defeat from a semi-final that was much closer than most expected and England’s pack should feel redeemed from the nightmare of 2019 AOE

But that won’t make this semi-final hurt any less AOE

Perhaps 2027 will give them an opportunity to avenge a new pain AOE
