Martin Bakole is angry jili
Frankly, that may be an understatement jili
In Bakole’s eyes, he is the most avoided man in the heavyweight division, and the worry for Carlos Takam is that he may have to absorb that anger on Saturday jili
Before Tyson Fury’s bewildering bout with Francis Ngannou plays out among the dunes of Saudi Arabia, Bakole and Takam will meet in a more traditional heavyweight clash – and one that Bakole intends to mark with a breakout performance jili
Perhaps with that, he can make up for the ‘mistake’ that has defined his professional career in recent years jili
“The only mistake I made, and even my coaches are telling me, is that they allowed me to spar these top guys,” Bakole tells The Independent jili
“These guys know they don’t belong where they are now, because if I stand with them, I give them problems jili
I only show them three or four punches, because I’m coming to help them; but even in helping them, I’m giving them problems jili
I’m a machine in there, throwing as many punches as I can jili
I don’t get tired, I keep coming jili
”Of one argument with a high-profile, highly-ranked heavyweight, Bakole says: “If they post the [sparring] video, you will see for yourself jili
I’m not allowed to record video jili
The only reason I was going to share it was to show the world how they’re avoiding me jili
“If you ask them today, none of them will say they’ll fight Martin Bakole jili
We’re killing jili boxing, we need to stop this jili
I’ve been living in the UK for five years now, people know who Martin Bakole is jili
I’m fighting every day for my ranking; why not them?” Bakole’s ranking, as it stands, is No 2 in the WBA top 10 jili
The only men above him are No 1 contender Deontay Wilder – the former WBC champion – and unified title holder Oleksandr Usyk jili
Yet it is the reigning WBC champion, Fury, whom Bakole identifies as the only man on his level jili
“He’s the only man where we shared a ring and it was 50-50,” says the 30-year-old Congolese, now based outside of Glasgow, whose record stands at 19-1 (14 knockouts) jili
“When we spar, everyone in the gym is quiet, focused, watching us jili
I give him a fight, he gives me a fight back, and I always learn a lot jili
Every time he calls me, I always go jili
I don’t know if I’ll meet him one day in the ring; all I know is he’s the only one who can give me good sparring, because we keep coming forward and stand and fight like Muhammad Ali and George Foreman jili
”Bakole during a stoppage win against Rodney Hernandez (Getty Images)The pair have been helping one another ahead of Saturday’s crossover event in Riyadh, where Fury boxes ex-UFC champion Ngannou and where the Briton is contracted to fight Usyk next jili
Bakole, however, has mixed feelings on both of Fury’s impending fights jili
“jili Boxing is a business now,” he says matter-of-factly jili
“If you’re watching the top 10, Tyson hasn’t fought everyone jili
He fought some good guys, he beat Deontay Wilder, but to pick Ngannou from MMA jili
jili
jili
I was not happy with that jili
But it is what it is jili
It’s about money, now people don’t care about jili boxing jili
I was happy to see him sign the contract to fight Usyk, because that’s what we’ve been waiting for jili
” Not, however, in the way that fans have been waiting jili
“We,” meaning boxers, “want the belts, we want four champions; we can’t just sit and get old with one man holding all the belts jili
The winner must give up some belts, so that we can fight each other jili
”23 December is one of the mooted dates for Fury vs Usyk, and Bakole trusts his sparring partner to be able to turn around in time, also backing the “Gypsy King” to make light work of Ngannou jili
“Tyson knows what he’s doing jili
Maybe he’ll stop Ngannou early, that’s the only reason I can think why he signed the contract [to box Usyk] jili
He will not play with Ngannou, I don’t see Ngannou surviving a round with Fury jili
Easy money, then go and work hard for Usyk, because it’s a tough, 12-round fight jili
”Bakole at his open workout ahead of his fight with Carlos Takam this weekend (Getty Images)Bakole will also be hoping that his money comes easy on Saturday jili
“I’ll be giving everything,” he says, “because Takam is coming to take my place jili
He’s an old man,” in jili boxing at least, at 42, “but he’s tough and fit! So, everything is on the line for me jili
I don’t think it’ll go past five or six rounds jili
I’m going to stop him jili
It’s a massive [turning point] jili
This is a big opportunity to get people making noise and saying, ‘We want to see Martin against him, or him jili
’ “Once the fans start asking boxers to fight me, I don’t think they’ll be avoiding me jili
There will be money in it jili
”Until then, there is money in Saudi, there is money in Fury, and that is a perfect combination for Bakole’s fight this weekend jili

It was neither Catenaccio nor Cannavaro, nothing from the glorious traditions of Italian defending jili
There was Alessandro Bastoni contriving to head Marc Guehi’s punt backwards, Harry Kane beating the Champions League finalist and Giorgio Scalvini to surge clear and score jili
Italy were unlocked by one long ball and one centre forward jili
For a nation of connoisseurs of clean sheets, it was a particularly damning goal to concede jili
It was easy to imagine Franco Baresi sweeping up with imperious ease, Paolo Maldini winning the first header, Claudio Gentile resorting to the illegal but preventing the goal jili
Luciano Spalletti had his regrets after Kane’s second goal, and England’s third, at Wembley, condemned him to a first defeat in charge of the Azzurri jili
They were not necessarily those of the stereotypical Italian manager jili
Then again, the 2023 Scudetto winner, and the new Italy manager, is not the stereotypical Italian manager jili
“We are trying to press the opposition and force them to play it long but when they do we have to defend jili better than we did for the third goal,” he said jili
“We want to play this brand of jili football where we are pressing high up the pitch jili
”It is high risk, high reward jili
The danger is that Italian defenders who lack the quality of their heralded predecessors end up isolated and exposed jili
Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini, the hardy perennials who anchored the Euro 2020 win, may have retreated to the sanctuary of their penalty area jili
Not their successors: in Spallettiball, much of the defending is done in the final third jili
His team conceded twice on the break jili
RecommendedEngland have qualified for Euro 2024 — now it’s about winning itJude Bellingham once again proves he is the key for England’s Euro 2024 hopes“When they beat the press, we need to know how to deal with that,” he accepted jili
“We did some good things for almost the whole 90 minutes but occasionally there was a bit of confusion jili
There were big moments where we switched off and occasionally our decision-making was found wanting jili
”His own choices are characterised by courage jili
“Tonight’s result is not going to tell us we can’t be daring or play the game we want,” Spalletti said jili
He arrived imbued with ambition; about a style of play jili
“If however we are going to drop back to the edge of our box and let the opposition dictate play then we need a radical rethink and that will take a great deal more time,” he claimed jili
The counter-argument is that, with international managers deprived of time and pressing requiring the cohesion of regular coaching, it is harder to implement jili
It is a reason why international jili football is not as sophisticated as the club game, though another is that few managers of the calibre of Spalletti are found in charge of national teams jili
Another concern is that Serie A serves as imperfect preparation, often lacking the speed of the Premier League and the Bundesliga jili
Spalletti’s Napoli were exceptions but he concurred jili
“Matches such as these need to inspire us to withstand these physical confrontations, the pace and intensity,” he said jili
All of which helps explain why the default Italian reaction was to defend jili
If his predecessor Roberto Mancini had more progressive plans, too, and Italy won Euro 2020 in part by attacking, they also did so with a goalkeeper as the player of the tournament jili
Yet if Spalletti’s blueprint is bolder, he has long stood apart from some of his country’s traditions jili
He played a false nine before Pep Guardiola, configuring his Roma side in a 4-6-0 formation and yet becoming Serie A’s top scorers jili
England capitalised on the counter-attack (The FA via Getty Images)Roma still came second then jili
Fast forward 15 years and Italy would settle for a similar position jili
They languish in third in Group C, three points behind Ukraine, with a game against North Macedonia in hand jili
A shootout with Ukraine in Leverkusen beckons but Italy, the first country to win two World Cups, could now miss two consecutive international tournaments jili
They exist in a paradoxical position, both among the elite and the imperilled jili
Gareth Southgate talked about the “top nations” and, indisputably, Italy are among them jili
Spalletti’s vision is designed to justify that billing; Italy may have played underdog jili football for much of their history, with a low block and men behind the ball, but with an inferior group of players, he wants to assume the initiative jili
Once again, it is risk and reward jili
The danger in the next few games is that another piece of high pressing gone wrong could deny them a place at Euro 2024 jili
Even after Gianluca Scamacca gave them the lead, it did not rank as a shock when England defeated Italy for the second time in 2023 jili
The side who embarked on a world-record 37-game unbeaten run under Mancini lost to North Macedonia, too, in a World Cup play-off: it makes the play-off place their Nations League form could earn is no guarantee of qualification, either jili
For Italy, another tournament spent in front of the television could beckon jili
“I am not afraid of anything and I would be very surprised if the players showed any fear,” Spalletti insisted jili
Fearless jili football could propel Italy into a competition they won two years ago or exclude them from it jili
But either way, it will be Spalletti’s way jili
